South Leeds Alternative Trading Enterprise
Re-use organisation of the Year nomination
About the charity:
People with learning disabilities have been at the heart of SLATE since its inception. We work primarily with people with learning disabilities alongside adults with mental health issues, long term unemployed and people with physical disabilities.
SLATE has developed formal training opportunities for supported volunteers with learning disabilities with the aim that they can progress on a personal individual basis. Wherever possible, SLATE progresses its volunteers into employment either within the organization or externally. The foundation of our existence is to build the confidence of our supported volunteers and show them that they are an able person with something to offer to society. All volunteers have passions and interests which can be built on in a work setting and we feel that it is our responsibility to grow each volunteer to a level where they can confidently apply for positions they are interested in.
What the charity achieved in 2016/2017:
SLATE is a family and all who are part of the organisation are classed the same whether that be volunteer, paid staff or board member. We all work towards our goals as a unified unit regardless of capability. At director level we have three active day to day volunteers who work closely with volunteers of all capability in aspects of operations.
Through the opportunity of working alongside people with a varied backgrounds we offer the volunteers an opportunity of self-development through experiences with these talented individuals. Most training is one to one based and is a relaxed opportunity for volunteers to grow at their own pace without feeling pressured or out of place.
Over the past 12 months 6 volunteers have gone onto paid employment.
We have also increased our tonnes diverted from landfill to 113tonnes per year. This is expected to increase by 4% this year.
SLATE works really hard on any opportunities that come our way through the Furniture Re-se Network. In the past year we have shown that we are one of the best at forging relationships that come our way through the Network. We have built up a fantastic relationship with John Lewis and Dunhelm and are making every opportunity to make these partnerships a success. We are a great ambassador for the FRN.
Why they should win:
SLATE does exactly what we say we do. We care for the people, planet and community. Our development of our volunteers is worth a million dollars. We are giving people a life and they are contributing more to the community. We offer the local community a chance to build a home. Everyone has the right to a bed, sofa and cooker. We make this become a reality.
